A Day In The Life Of A ‘Mega’ Free Clinic

With 57,200 uninsured people in Washington, D.C.,
Communities Are Responding Everyday (C.A.R.E.) convened a
free clinic in the city’s convention center on Aug. 4.
Mega clinics are a last-resort safety net and seek to connect
patients with local community resources including other free
clinics, Federally Qualified Health Centers and safety-net
hospitals. “We look at ourselves as part of the
solution,” said Nicole Lamoureux of the National
Association of Free Clinics (NAFC). Organizers are holding
clinics around the country; most of the expanded coverage
under health care reform won’t take effect until
2014.
