Saudi Arabia Approves $1M 6-Month Polio Eradication Campaign in Afghanistan
Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah approved an agreement on Monday for a $1 million six-month polio eradication campaign that will provide 3.8 million children in Afghanistan with polio vaccines, the Arab News reports. The agreement was signed by UNICEF and the Saudi Committee for the Relief of the Afghan People (Rasooldeen, Arab News, 5/12).
Donors Give Zambia $174M To Support HIV/AIDS Programs, Stabilize Economy
Zambia's Treasury spokesperson on Monday announced that the country had been given over $174 million from the United Kingdom, Norway, Germany, Canada, the Netherlands, Sweden and the European Union and a grant from the World Bank to help fight HIV/AIDS and stabilize the economy, Reuters/News24.com reports. The donors supplied the funding last week after the International Monetary Fund (IMF) released $160.1 million of its total $256.4 million financing package to Zambia (Reuters/News24.com, 5/11).
Cervical Cancer Screening To Launch in Kolkata
US Indian News explores a new program launching in West Bengal that will offer free cervical cancer screenings and follow-up treatment to 50,000 women over the next five years. The project made possible through a collaboration between the Kolkata-based Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute and Qiagen, a Dutch biotech company that produces cervical test kits will take place at community-based mobile field clinics in the villages surrounding Kolkata. Educational campaigns, also supported by the project, will work to raise awareness about HPV, cervical cancer and other women's health issues (Swapan, US Indian News, 5/11).
