World Bank to Provide Kenya with Interest-Free Credit to Improve Health Care, Fight AIDS
The World Bank on Tuesday announced a $50 million interest-free credit to help Kenya improve its health care system and "step up" its fight against AIDS, Agence France-Presse reports. Calling HIV/AIDS a "development crisis," the bank noted that the prevalence rate of HIV among Kenyans ages 15 to 49 had reached 13.9% in 1999, after averaging an 11% annual increase since 1990. The funds will be used to "help authorities decentralize medical services, expand the scope of anti-AIDS activities and promote reproductive health" (Agence France-Presse, 12/13).
