November-December Kaiser/Harvard Health News Index Highlights Top News Stories of 2000
Last winter's flu out break was the "most closely followed health news story of the year," with 67% of Americans following the media coverage "very" or "fairly" closely, according to a year 2000 summary featured in the November-December issue of the Health News Index, a bimonthly report that measures public awareness of leading health news stories. The report, sponsored by the Kaiser Family Foundation and the Harvard School of Public Health, also found that women were "slightly more likely" than men to follow health news, especially stories related to cancer. In addition, many seniors "tuned in" to health news in 2000, following the Medicare reform and prescription drug debates "especially closely" (KFF release, 12/15).
