Netaid.org Generates Awareness of AIDS in Africa, Promotes Contributions to Fight Epidemic
"One of the many benefits of the Internet is that it has shrunk our global neighborhood, giving us the means ... as individuals to connect and do something to support communities in need, across time and distance," David Morrison, president of Netaid.org writes in a Nando Times
op-ed. Given this new facility, "There should be no more excuses. We all have the means to help" fight the "holocaust" of AIDS in Africa, he says. Developed by Cisco Systems and the U.N. Development Program, Netaid.org encourages Internet users to become involved in helping Africa by offering a number of ways to support programs providing "HIV/AIDS prevention and education, health care and economic opportunities for families ravaged by AIDS. Every penny of each donation goes directly to a program of the visitor's choosing," Morrison explains. Netaid.org serves as a "conduit between Internet users and development projects in the world's poorest communities." Morrison describes one program, "Breaking the Silence," which allows visitors to learn about the epidemic in parts of the world hardest hit by AIDS and enables them to become involved with an online volunteering program managed by U.N. Volunteers. Visitors can donate to projects such as the loveLife campaign, an AIDS education effort for South African teens. Morrison concludes, "Many millions of people can be protected through education and prevention efforts that can change attitudes and behavior and stem the tide of this epidemic. With access to affordable antiretroviral drugs, the tens of millions of Africans who are already infected can extend their active lives and continue to support their families" (Morrison, Nando Times, 2/28).
