UNDP, Denmark Provide Funds to Assist Tanzania in Establishing National AIDS Commission
The U.N. Development Program and Denmark have granted $374,668 to assist Tanzania in creating a national AIDS commission, Xinhua reports. The UNDP country office said in a statement that the money will help the government establish the Tanzania Commission for HIV/AIDS (TACAIDS) and assist a "formulation team" that will develop a working plan for the commission, including "structure, roles and capacity building requirements." President Benjamin Mkapa last year proposed the commission to "ensur[e] that all stakeholders and partners are involved in the national multisectoral response" to the epidemic. Herman Lupogo, TACAIDS executive chairperson, said that two million Tanzanians are estimated to be infected with HIV and added that the goal of the commission was to "curtail by 100%" the HIV infection rate in the country by 2015 (Xinhua, 4/4).
