‘Cinema Against AIDS’ Gala Uses Diamonds to Raise $2 Million for AIDS Research
The Cinema Against AIDS gala at the Cannes Film Festival on Thursday featured a "unique" diamond necklace collection valued at $25 million that will be sold next month, with 10% of the proceeds going to the American Foundation for AIDS Research, the New York Post reports. Actress Elizabeth Taylor opened the evening event with a "rousing speech about the ever-present danger of AIDS," and celebrities auctioned off merchandise and art in the effort, which raised more than $2 million for AIDS research. The gala was hosted by the De Beers Group's Diamond Trading Co. and Miramax Films (Feinstein, New York Post, 5/19).
