Secretary of State Colin Powell to Discuss HIV/AIDS With Officials on Visit to Bahamas Next Week
The State Department yesterday announced that Secretary of State Colin Powell will visit the Bahamas next Monday to discuss with Bahamian officials "regional issues," including HIV/AIDS prevention, Reuters reports. The officials also will discuss drug smuggling, illegal migration and financial reform (Reuters, 8/7). According to the World Health Organization, the Bahamas, an archipelago of islands with a population of about 300,000 people, has an estimated adult HIV infection rate of 4%, with about 1,000 AIDS orphans (WHO, Bahamas Epidemiological Fact Sheet, 2000 Update).
