National Minority AIDS Council Cancels 5th U.S. Conference on AIDS
The fifth U.S. Conference on AIDS, scheduled for this weekend in Miami Beach, Fla., has been cancelled, a National Minority AIDS Council release states. Due to transportation problems caused by the shutdown of air travel following terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C., it is "painfully clear that the nation's transportation system will not return to enough of a normal state to allow the people to reach the conference," NMAC Executive Director Paul Kawata said in the release. NMAC will attempt to schedule "make-shift workshops" for the more than 300 people who made it to Miami and will provide refunds for those who could not attend (NMAC release, 9/13).
