Response to Colorado’s New Medical Marijuana Registry Smaller Than Expected
Six months after Colorado's voter-approved medical marijuana initiative took effect on June 1, participation in the registry has been lower than state officials predicted, the New York Times reports. Only 101 people have applied to obtain up to six plants or two ounces of the drug for medicinal purposes, and 98 of those people have been approved. Officials had expected 600 to 800 people to apply for the program during its first 12 months, as Oregon residents did following approval of a similar program in that state. Unlike a medical marijuana program in California, Colorado's initiative does not allow buyer clubs for the acquisition of marijuana (Sink, New York Times, 12/14).
