German condom manufacturer Condomi AG plans to become the "biggest condom manufacturer in the world" by expanding production capacity at its plants in Germany and South Africa, Reuters reports. Volker Courbiere, head of Condomi, said that the company, which is currently estimated to be the world's fifth or sixth largest condom producer, "want[s] to be the market leader on price and quality." Courbiere hopes to triple production capacity at Condomi Africa Ltd., its joint venture in South Africa. The company plans to provide family planning information and education on HIV/AIDS in South Africa and hopes to make the country its "hub" for all of Africa. Condomi also intends to "penetrate the lucrative Russian and Ukrainian markets" as a potentially important growth market (Lauer, Reuters, 2/27).
