Malawi to Receive ‘Biggest Grant’ From Global Fund, NPR Reports
NPR's "Weekend All Things Considered" yesterday reported that Malawi will receive the "biggest grant" of $300 million over five years from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Malawi has approximately 3% of AIDS cases worldwide and nearly one in five Malawian adults is HIV-positive. Malawi's program, which aims to provide antiretroviral drug therapy for thousands of HIV-positive people, is "very ambitious," according to Dr. Malcolm Bryant, who directs HIV, TB and community-based programs for the Strategies for Enhancing Access to Medicines Program. NPR reports that Malawi may have received the largest grant from the fund because it "is small enough to carry out a countrywide AIDS strategy" or because "its leaders' vision is so bold." The full segment is available in RealPlayer Audio online (Knox, "Weekend All Things Considered," NPR, 4/28).
