Los Angeles Times Profiles Adoption By HIV-Positive Single Gay Man
The Los Angeles Times yesterday profiled the story of Robert, a 52-year-old, HIV-positive, gay, single, white man who became a foster parent for and later adopted Tina, a black infant born to a drug-addicted mother. While the Times reports that Robert appears to be "winning his battle with HIV," his age, race, marital status, sexual orientation and HIV status have made this adoption -- which "breaks almost every taboo about parent and child" -- a "Rorschach test for observers," some of whom question whether it is in Tina's best interest to have an adoptive parent "with an illness that may take his life" (Los Angeles Times, 5/5).
