Canada’s National Post Profiles Joint U.S.-Canadian-Kenyan Circumcision Study
The National Post on Saturday examined a research project in Kisumu, Kenya, that is seeking to determine whether male circumcision has a protective effect against HIV infection. The UNIM Project, which stands for the Universities of Nairobi, Illinois and Manitoba, is a five-year effort jointly funded by the NIH and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. The study involves 2,800 men ages 18 to 24, half of whom are circumcised immediately and half of whom agree to remain uncircumcised for at least two years, at which point they can choose to be circumcised. The researchers participating in the study speculate that widespread circumcision in Africa could halve new HIV infections in some areas (Krotz, National Post, 6/29).
