Gates Urges Governments to Help Fight HIV/AIDS, Other Health Challenges in Africa
Speaking at a business forum in Toronto on Tuesday, Microsoft Chair Bill Gates said that he was "very struck by how little the world at large is contributing to the challenges that Africa faces" in terms of health problems, and he urged national governments to "step up and do a lot more," the Toronto Star reports. Gates, who has given "hundreds of millions of dollars" to global health issues such as HIV/AIDS through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, said that he had broached the issue with Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien, who was also in Toronto for an appearance at the Microsoft-sponsored meeting. Canada has pledged $100 million over three years to the Global Fund for AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, the Star reports (Hamilton, Toronto Star, 8/21).
