New York Times Profiles AIDS Orphans in Rural China
The New York Times on Sunday profiled the "explosion of destitute orphans" in rural China whose parents died from AIDS-related illnesses. Some observers estimate that more than one million people in rural counties in Henan province became infected with HIV as a result of unsafe blood-selling practices. The Times examines the orphan situation in Danghu, a village in southern Henan province. At the beginning of 2001, there were no reported orphans, but currently there are about 20, and experts predict there will be "hundreds more" within the next two years. Two hundred of the village's families are headed by one parent, who is often ill with AIDS-related illness (Rosenthal, New York Times, 8/25). The full article is available online.
