CBS ‘Evening News’ Reports on South African Children Orphaned by AIDS
CBS' "Evening News with Dan Rather" on Monday included a segment on AIDS orphans in South Africa. CBS reports that as many as six million children may be orphaned by the AIDS-related death of a parent by 2015 in South Africa. The U.N. World Summit on Sustainable Development taking place in Johannesburg, South Africa, this week will "only be a success if it can guarantee" AIDS orphans "a future beyond their tragic past," according to CBS. Chris Desmond, an economist with the Health, Economics & AIDS Research Division of the University of Natal in Durban, South Africa, said he "blames rich countries" such as the United States for "failing to share their wealth" with developing countries fighting HIV/AIDS. A transcript of the report is available online (Palmer, "CBS Evening News," CBS, 8/26).
A video clip of the segment is available in RealPlayer online.
