Rep. Waters to Receive Global AIDS Alliance Award
Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) tomorrow is scheduled to receive the Global AIDS Alliance's Stop Global AIDS Leadership Award for her "outstanding contribution to the fight against global AIDS" (GAA release, 10/2). Waters has been a vocal proponent of debt relief for developing nations; last year she and Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) introduced a bill that would allow the U.S. Treasury Secretary to lobby the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund to allow debt relief for the world's poorest nations (Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report, 4/26/01). Waters will accept the award in Los Angeles during a ceremony that will also honor the HIV/AIDS-related efforts of Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) and Jackie Bataringaya, coordinator for HIV/AIDS activities at ActionAid. Stephen Lewis, U.N. Special Envoy for AIDS in Africa, is scheduled to be the keynote speaker at the event (GAA release, 10/2).
