Baltimore Sun Profiles World’s 14 Million AIDS Orphans
The Baltimore Sun yesterday examined the "burgeoning population" of AIDS orphans, children who have lost one or both parents as a result of AIDS-related illnesses. According to the most recent UNAIDS statistics, there are approximately 14 million such children worldwide, 11 million of whom live in sub-Saharan Africa. Most governments have "failed to recognize" the situation, which often forces children to drop out of school prematurely, places financial strains on the children's communities and can sometimes lead to forced child labor and prostitution, the Sun reports (Murphy, Baltimore Sun, 10/27). The complete article is available online.
