HHS Creates ‘Unified’ HIV/AIDS and STD Advisory Committee
HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson yesterday announced a new, "unified" HIV/AIDS and STD prevention and treatment advisory committee that will encourage collaboration throughout the department in related areas. The CDC's Advisory Committee for HIV and STD Prevention and the HRSA AIDS Advisory Committee will be joined to form the new committee. The committee will advise Thompson, CDC and HRSA on a "full range of issues" associated with HIV/AIDS and STD prevention, care and treatment. Thompson said, "This merger puts the best of both worlds -- prevention and treatment -- together for the benefit of all who are affected by this illness. Uniting the top people from both fields in one committee will spark greater ingenuity and improved coordination as we continue our war against the national and global menace of HIV and AIDS" (HHS release, 11/14).
