University of South Carolina Creates Institute for HIV Prevention
The University of South Carolina announced on Tuesday that it will use a three-year, $5.2 million grant from the CDC and the Association of Schools of Public Health to create the Institute for HIV Prevention Leadership, which will help community leaders fight HIV/AIDS in their localities, the Associated Press reports (Associated Press, 11/19). Institute Co-Director Donna Richter said that institute staff have already trained nearly 100 participants from 29 states and U.S. territories in HIV prevention strategies. Participants learn how to develop effective HIV prevention programs and how to evaluate existing programs to see if they are working. "People are more comfortable getting prevention messages from someone they know and trust," Richter said (Frieden, Columbia State, 11/20).
