Newsweek Examines Indian HIV/AIDS Epidemic
Newsweek magazine this week examines India's HIV/AIDS epidemic, which -- together with China's burgeoning epidemic -- could represent the "next wave" of the international HIV/AIDS crisis. Approximately four million HIV-positive individuals currently live in India, and that number could grow to 25 million by 2010, according to a recent U.S. government report. However, an HIV/AIDS "disaster" in India is not inevitable, due to "substantial" donations from international donors, such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and due to the country's growing economy and its "rudiments of a health care system" (Cowley, Newsweek, 11/25).
