Taiwan Donates $1 Million to Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria
Taiwan on Tuesday announced that it has donated $1.03 million to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, Agence France-Presse reports. "Through this donation, Taiwan is showing once again its commitment in the area of world health, [a] commitment that it would want to see developed thanks to its admission to the World Health Organization," a Taiwanese statement said. Taiwan, which was denied a U.N. seat in 1971, last May was also denied observer status by the WHO assembly because of objections from Chinese officials, according to Agence France-Presse. The Global Fund so far has received about $2.1 billion in funding commitments (Agence France-Presse, 12/17).
