Phoenix, Ariz., AIDS Advocate Bruce Kurtz Dies of AIDS-Related Comiplications
Bruce Kurtz, 59, who founded ACT Up Phoenix in 1990, died Saturday of AIDS-related complications, the Arizona Republic reports. He founded the local chapter of the national HIV/AIDS activist organization to "raise awareness of AIDS patients and their rights," according to the Republic. Kurtz was known for a 1990 protest in which ACT UP Phoenix attached condoms and a protest note to 2,000 newsstand issues of the Arizona Republic in response to a cartoon they considered offensive. Kurtz moved to Phoenix from New York City in 1985 to serve as contemporary art curator at the Phoenix Museum of Art. He retired in 1994 and moved to Paris. He returned to Phoenix in June 2002 to enter an assisted living facility and was in hospice care during the week leading up to his death (Nilsen, Arizona Republic, 3/25).
