PRI’s ‘The World’ Reports on Adoption of Ethiopian AIDS Orphans
PRI's "The World" yesterday reported on the "scores" of U.S. families who adopt Ethiopian AIDS orphans each year. According to PRI, HIV/AIDS has killed "hundreds of thousands" of Ethiopians and produced about one million AIDS orphans. Ethiopian orphans' situation has made adoptions from the country "increasingly popular," as people in the United States are "compelled by the stories they've heard in news reports" about AIDS orphans, PRI reports. Merrily Ripley, founder and director of Adoption Advocates International, a U.S. firm that has placed approximately 200 Ethiopian children in homes in the United States since it opened two years ago, said that "a lot of people decide [that] if they're going to adopt, they might as well adopt a child that really needs a family and somehow these children seem extra needy" (Costello, "The World," PRI, 7/21).
