New York Times Discusses Microbicide Development With Head of International Partnership for Microbicides
The New York Times today features an interview with Dr. Zeda Rosenberg, CEO of the International Partnership for Microbicides, which is working to develop a topical microbicide that will kill HIV in the vagina before the virus can infect the cells. Although HIV is primarily transmitted through heterosexual intercourse in much of Africa and Asia, no female-controlled HIV prevention method currently is widely available, according to the Times. The partnership, which is funded by the Rockefeller Foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and several European governments, will "act as a convenor, catalyst and financial engine for microbicide research and development," Rosenberg said. Rosenberg said that her organization will identify the most promising products and give money and contracts to move them through development and into clinical trials (Dreifus, New York Times, 7/29). The complete interview is available online.
