New York Times Profiles HIV-Positive Former NFL Player Roy Simmons
The New York Times on Sunday profiled former NFL player Roy Simmons, who for the first time has publicly announced that he is HIV-positive. Simmons -- who in 1992 announced that he is gay -- said that by telling his story, he hopes to help other men in his situation to avoid putting their sexual partners at risk for HIV. According to the Times, men's professional sports remain a "fortress of denial" concerning gay and HIV/AIDS issues. In recognition of World AIDS Day, Simmons on Monday is scheduled to appear at an AIDS benefit in New York City and is scheduled to be interviewed on television programs and will appear on a public service announcement on cable television (Orth, New York Times, 11/30).
