Ugandan Motorcyclists To Ride 3,800 Miles To Raise HIV/AIDS Awareness
Twelve motorcyclists from the Uganda Bikers Association on Sunday are expected to embark on a nearly 3,800 mile ride from Johannesburg, South Africa, to Kampala, Uganda, to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS, Uganda's Monitor reports. The ride, which has been named the HIV/AIDS Ambassadors of Hope Ride, will travel through South Africa, Botswana, Zambia, Tanzania and Kenya before their expected return to Uganda on March 21. The riders, who have been working with UNAIDS, hope to raise $7,500 to pay school fees for 75 HIV-positive children at Mbuya Children's Outreach Village. Minister of State for Primary Health Care Dr. Alex Kamugisha gave the riders the Ugandan flag and commended them for serving as ambassadors in the country's fight against AIDS. "We need people over and above the government who should voluntarily come up to help society reduce this burden," Kamugisha said (Ssali/Nafula, Monitor, 2/26).
