Ottowa Magazine Examines AIDS Pandemic, Contributions of Canadian Researchers in Fighting Disease
The Ottowa Citizen's Weekly magazine on Sunday examined the history of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, including Canadian scientists who have worked on the development of prevention strategies and treatments for the disease. The article profiles the work of Frank Plummer, director general of Health Canada's Centre for Infectious Disease Prevention and Control, and his research on commercial sex workers in Kenya who appear to be immune to HIV infection. The article also profiles Mark Wainberg of the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal, whose work -- including the initial identification of lamivudine -- led to the study of antiretroviral drugs. The article examines the origins of HIV, prevention efforts, drug resistance, vaccine research and other challenges in fighting the pandemic (Brady, Ottowa Citizen's Weekly, 8/15). The complete article is available online.
