Brief Examines Economic, Epidemiological Factors Affecting HIV/AIDS Vaccine Development
- "Why Is There No AIDS Vaccine?" Center for International Development at Harvard University: Authors Michael Kremer of Harvard University and Christopher Snyder of George Washington University argue that economic and epidemiological factors might create incentives to direct research and development efforts toward new medications and away from vaccines for HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. They write that an "HIV/AIDS vaccine is arguably key to curbing the epidemic" and suggest that more subsidies be provided to vaccine R&D than for pharmaceuticals or that vaccine pricing be agreed upon in advance to encourage R&D (Kremer/Snyder, CID Working Paper No. 111, 10/6).
