Powell To Host Jazz Musicians Traveling to India To Raise HIV/AIDS Awareness
Secretary of State Colin Powell on Tuesday in the State Department's Treaty Room will host a group of U.S. jazz musicians who will be traveling to India in January for concerts to raise HIV/AIDS awareness in that country, Kolkata's Telegraph reports. The concerts -- sponsored by the State Department, BET Jazz, MTV-India and the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz -- will take place in Mumbai and New Dehli beginning Jan. 13 (Nayar, Telegraph, 12/12). The jazz performers traveling to India include George Duke, Al Jarreau, Earl Klugh and Ravi Coltrane, according to the Associated Press (Associated Press, 12/13). The theme of the concerts will be "Indians and Americans Together Against HIV/AIDS," the Hindustan Times reports (Rajagopalan, Hindustan Times, 12/13). India has the second-largest population of HIV-positive people in the world, with approximately 5.1 million people living with the disease (Associated Press, 12/13).
