‘Marketplace’ Reports on South African Concert, Botswanan Pageant Aimed at Raising Funds, Reducing Stigma for Women’s HIV/AIDS Fight
APM's "Marketplace" on Thursday reported on South Africa's second "46664" HIV/AIDS awareness concert, which is scheduled for Saturday and will focus on HIV prevention, with an emphasis on women (Wilson, "Marketplace," APM, 3/17). The concert, which will be held at the Fancourt Hotel, Country Club and Golf Estate in George, South Africa, is expected to feature 150 local and international musicians, including Usher and Annie Lennox, and will be spearheaded by the musical group Queen, whose original lead singer, Freddie Mercury, died of AIDS-related complications in 1991 (Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report, 2/22). 'Marketplace' also reported on Botswana's ongoing "Miss HIV Stigma Free" beauty pageant, which seeks to address the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS among women. The 'Marketplace' segment includes comments from Kesego Basha-Mubeli, founder of the Miss HIV Stigma Free Pageant and the HIV/AIDS advocacy group Centre for Youth and Hope; Onalethata Johnson, coordinator for the HIV/AIDS Program at Debswana, Botswana's largest diamond mining company; and Cynthia Leshomo, the 32-year-old HIV/AIDS counselor who won the 2005 pageant ("Marketplace," APM, 3/17).
