Transitions Online Examines HIV/AIDS Among Women in Latvia
The Czech magazine Transitions Online on Thursday examined how "gender could be a major factor" in the spread of HIV/AIDS in Latvia, as the virus increasingly is affecting women in the country. More than 800 HIV-positive women, most of them between the ages of 15 and 49, live in the country, according to the AIDS Prevention Center in Riga, Latvia. In the 15 to 19 age bracket, there are four HIV-positive girls to every one HIV-positive boy, Transitions Online reports. A lack of control over barrier contraceptive methods, involvement in commercial sex work and injection drug use are contributing to the increasing number of HIV cases among young women in the country, according to Transitions Online(Stukuls Eglitis/Cihanovica, Transitions Online, 5/19).
