First Lady Laura Bush To Highlight U.S. HIV/AIDS Programs in Africa During Trip to Continent Next Month
First lady Laura Bush next month is scheduled to visit Africa following the Group of Eight summit in Gleneagles, Scotland, White House spokesperson Scott McClellan announced on Tuesday, AFP/Yahoo! News reports. "This trip is an opportunity for Mrs. Bush to talk about the importance of education, to highlight the progress being made on the president's HIV/AIDS initiative and to discuss women's rights," McClellan said (AFP/Yahoo! News, 6/21). The President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief is a five-year, $15 billion program that directs funding for HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria primarily to 15 focus countries and provides funding to the Global Fund To Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report, 6/14).
