NIAID Infectious Diseases Assistance for Providers, Patients in Hurricane-Affected Region
- "NIAID Responds to Hurricane Katrina," National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, NIH: As part of a consolidated NIH effort and in collaboration with academic medical centers and the nation's medical professional societies, NIAID infectious disease experts -- including HIV/AIDS experts -- are providing 24-hour telephone medical consultations for health care providers and patients in the region affected by Hurricane Katrina. The toll-free number is 1-866-887-2842. Callers are routed to an on-call infectious disease physician, who can provide guidance and/or connect the individual to an appropriate person from a nationwide list of volunteer infectious diseases specialists. Members of groups such as the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the HIV Medicine Association, the Regional Centers of Excellence for Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Diseases, and the American Society for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene are assisting in the effort (NIAID Web notice, 9/11).
