Partners in Health Receives Humanitarian Prize for Global Health Work
The not-for-profit organization Partners in Health on Monday received the $1.5 million Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize for its efforts to provide medical services to impoverished populations worldwide, the AP/Boston Globe reports (AP/Boston Globe, 10/31). PIH was co-founded in 1987 by physician and now Harvard University professor Paul Farmer. The group established its first community-based health care project in Cange, Haiti, and now operates projects in Boston, Peru, Russia, Mexico, Guatemala and Rwanda (Schlein, VOA News, 10/31). PIH trains local health care workers to provide basic health care services, including antiretroviral therapy, prenatal care, and treatment for illnesses such as malaria and tuberculosis. According to Farmer, the award will allow the organization to "bring more people on board to provide decent health care to everyone in need" (AP/Boston Globe, 10/31).
