Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report Summarizes Global Health Features Associated With ‘Rx for Survival’
Public radio and television stations continue to air global health reports on their nationally syndicated programs in conjunction with PBS' "Rx for Survival: A Global Health Challenge." Summaries of some recent reports related to HIV/AIDS appear below.
- NPR's "Talk of the Nation": The program reports that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's contributions to international health programs "now rival" the total annual budget of the World Health Organization. The segment includes comments from Helene Gayle, director of HIV, tuberculosis and reproductive health programs at the Gates Foundation, and Michael Specter, a reporter for the New Yorker (Conan, "Talk of the Nation," NPR, 11/3). The complete segment is available online in RealPlayer. Expanded NPR coverage of the series is available online.
- PBS' "NOW": The program presents a special 90-minute broadcast, including a segment titled, "Global Health: America's Response," that examines U.S. HIV/AIDS policy from the 1980s to the present. The program also examines Uganda's use of the "ABC" HIV prevention model -- which stands for abstinence, be faithful and condoms. The program's Web site includes a timeline of the epidemic, a map of affected areas, shifts in U.S. HIV/AIDS spending priorities and a narrated photo essay about the program's visit to Uganda (Brancaccio, "NOW," PBS, 11/4). A transcript and video of the segment in RealPlayer will be available online after the broadcast. Check local PBS listings for show times.
- PBS' "The Tavis Smiley Show": The program includes an interview with Ernest Darkoh, the former operations manager of Botswana's public antiretroviral drug program and co-founder of BroadReach Healthcare, a private company working to improve health care access worldwide. Darkoh was one of the international health "heroes" profiled in the "Rx for Survival" series (Smiley, "The Tavis Smiley Show, PBS, 10/31). The complete transcript is available online. The complete segment is available online in RealPlayer.
