Gates Foundation Executive Helene Gayle Named President, CEO of CARE USA
The Atlanta-based advocacy group CARE USA on Friday named Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation executive Helene Gayle as the organization's new president and CEO, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (Bixler, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 12/3). Gayle will leave her position as director of the Gates Foundation's HIV, Tuberculosis and Reproductive Health program in February 2006, after serving five years with the foundation. Gayle, who also serves as president of the International AIDS Society, has 20 years of experience with HIV/AIDS, including previously directing CDC's National Center for HIV, STD and TB Prevention (Bock, Seattle Times, 12/3). Patty Stonesifer, co-chair and president of the Gates Foundation, in a statement said, "Helene has made incredible contributions to the foundation and the field of global health during her time here," adding, "We are confident this transition means great things for her and for CARE" (Stonesifer statement, 12/2). Gayle, the first black woman to lead the organization, will replace Peter Bell, who has held the position for 10 years (Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 12/3).
