Report Investigates Role of Mothers in HIV Risk Reduction Among Teenage Daughters
"Mothers' Effectiveness as HIV Risk Reduction Educators for Adolescent Daughters," Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved: In the report, Barbara Dancy, associate professor at the University of Illinois-Chicago College of Nursing, and colleagues look at mothers' roles in reducing the risk of HIV transmission among their adolescent daughters. According to the report, black mothers are effective both in reducing levels of sexual activity in their daughters and increasing the adolescents' knowledge of HIV transmission. The authors suggest that mothers' involvement should be incorporated into HIV prevention programs (Dancy et al., Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved, February 2006).
