HIV/AIDS Awareness Among Youth Crucial in Efforts To Tackle Epidemic, UNAIDS Says
Raising awareness about HIV/AIDS among young people is critical in global efforts to control the pandemic, Michel Sidibe, UNAIDS director of country and regional support, said Tuesday, Thailand's Bangkok Post reports. Speaking in Pattaya, Thailand, at the launch of a three-day meeting that aims to find effective strategies to achieve the U.N. Millennium Development Goal of universal access to treatment for HIV/AIDS by 2010, Sidibe said "[W]e will not [be] able to fight the HIV/AIDS epidemic if we fail to communicate with the young generation on how to protect themselves from the disease." The meeting also aims to determine how to manage funds pledged last year to UNAIDS by the Group of Eight industrialized countries (Wipatayotin, Bangkok Post, 2/15).
