Chicago Tribune Examines Efforts of Global HIV Vaccine Enterprise
The Chicago Tribune on Friday examined the efforts of the Global HIV Vaccine Enterprise, a consortium of researchers and organizations dedicated to speeding research on HIV vaccines. Two research centers -- one established by NIH's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the other located at Duke University -- created under the enterprise aim to bring together researchers working throughout the world, including China, India, South Africa and Thailand. According to Barton Haynes, director of the Duke Human Vaccine Institute who heads the NIAID facility, the consortium will conduct "desperately needed" HIV research in clinics and laboratories in areas highly affected by the pandemic, such as sub-Saharan Africa (Goering, Chicago Tribune, 3/24).
