Media Should Find New Ways To Increase HIV/AIDS Awareness, Prevention, Opinion Piece Says
The Caribbean Broadcast Media Leadership Summit on HIV/AIDS is to be "applaud[ed]" as a positive step in media involvement in addressing HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean, members of the media should create "new innovative ways" to spread the HIV prevention message, columnist Jenique Millington writes in a Barbados Advocate opinion piece. The media, which have "the power to get messages through," need to be "more outspoken" about HIV/AIDS in order to "actively destroy" stigma that ostracizes HIV-positive people, Millington says. She adds that the media should "pu[t] a face to the virus" and help people to view those living with HIV/AIDS as "our brothers and sisters and treat them as the human beings they are" (Millington, Barbados Advocate, 5/11).This is part of the KHN Morning Briefing, a summary of health policy coverage from major news organizations.
