NEJM Examines Brazil’s Success in Preventing Spread of HIV
- "Fighting HIV - Lessons from Brazil," New England Journal of Medicine: Susan Okie, a contributing editor of NEJM, examines the factors that have contributed to Brazil's success in slowing the spread of HIV/AIDS in the country. Okie found Brazil's "persistent and aggressive" HIV prevention efforts have played an important role in "containing the country's epidemic," as has the 1996 decision by Brazil's Congress to provide antiretroviral drugs at no cost to all HIV-positive people who need them (Okie, NEJM, 5/11).
