Arizona Community Center Receives SAMSHA Grant To Improve HIV/AIDS Care for Minorities
The El Rio, Ariz., Community Health Center has received a $525,000 annual grant from HHS' Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to offer intensive outpatient HIV/AIDS care to minorities, the Tuscon Citizen reports. According to the Citizen, services provided through the grant will use a "culturally sensitive approach." Pima County has an estimated 2,025 HIV/AIDS cases and an estimated 675 undiagnosed cases, Robert Bailey, an epidemiologist in Arizona, said. Blacks have the highest rate of HIV cases in the county. SAHMSA has awarded $42 million in grants to not-for-profit groups serving minorities with HIV/AIDS in California; Georgial; Masachusetts; Michigan; Missouri; New York state; Washington; D.C.; and Wisconsin (Tuscon Citizen, 11/16).
