PEPFAR To Provide $59M to Vietnam for HIV/AIDS Prevention, Treatment Efforts
The President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief recently announced that it will provide Vietnam with $59 million this year to prevent and fight HIV/AIDS, the Saigon Times Daily reports. The funding will help develop comprehensive models for HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment and train health workers in HIV/AIDS treatment and care, according to the Times Daily. Vietnam in June 2004 became the 15th focus country to received PEPFAR funding, and the program has allocated nearly $80 million to the country to help fight the epidemic. Vietnam received about $34 million last year from PEPFAR (Nguyen, Saigon Times Daily, 4/17). As of December 2006, Vietnam had recorded 116,565 HIV cases, 20,195 AIDS cases and 11,802 AIDS-related deaths, according to the Vietnam Department of AIDS Prevention (Kaiser Daily HIV/AIDS Report, 3/9).
