House Appropriations Subcommittee Approves Interior-Environment Spending Bill With Funds for Indian Health Service
The House Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior, Environment and Related Agencies on Wednesday by voice vote approved a $27.6 billion fiscal year 2008 Interior-Environment appropriations bill that would provide funds for the Indian Health Service, CQ HealthBeat reports. Under the legislation, IHS would receive $3.4 billion in FY 2008, an increase of $204 million from FY 2007, to address a budget deficit.
Appropriations committee Chair David Obey (D-Wis.) called the budget deficit at IHS "an absolute national disgrace and a moral abomination" (Tollefson, CQ HealthBeat, 5/23).
