Readmissions Penalties By State: Year Two

Medicare evaluated the readmission rates of 3,379 hospitals in determining the second year of penalties in the Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program. Medicare will apply the penalties to all its payments for patient stays between Oct. 1, 2013, and Sept. 30, 2014.

This chart lists states in the first column. The next three columns show the number of hospitals in each state that received no penalty, the number of hospitals that were penalized and the total number of hospitals. The fifth column calculates the percent of hospitals that are receiving penalties, and the sixth column shows what the average penalty is of those that are getting fined.

Please note: The penalties do not apply to Maryland hospitals, as that state has a unique reimbursement arrangement with Medicare, and thus Maryland is not included in this table.
