2002 Olympics Will Not Provide Free Condoms
A proposal to distribute condoms to athletes competing at the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah, has been denied by Salt Lake County Mayor Nancy Workman, the Salt Lake Tribune reports. Kathryn Vedder, director of the Salt Lake Valley Health Department, requested that condoms be distributed to athletes and placed in public restrooms, but the mayor vetoed the idea, stating that she "doesn't believe Olympic condoms are a good expenditure of taxpayer dollars" (Rolly/Jacobsen-Wells, Salt Lake Tribune, 4/4).
