Guardian Profiles HIV/AIDS Prevention Efforts by Muslim Leaders in Kashmir
The Guardian yesterday profiled HIV/AIDS prevention efforts in India's Kashmir Valley that are using Muslim leaders to spread messages. HIV/AIDS advocates have asked Imams, Muslim holy men, to include messages about the disease and safe sex in their Friday sermons, because they think that religious leaders have the best chance of reaching people in the predominantly Muslim and "deeply conservative" area. Kashmir has one of the lowest AIDS rates in India, but new HIV cases have risen 66% over the last four years, according to the National AIDS Control Organization.
