Congress ‘Finally Awakens’ to International AIDS Pandemic, Editorial Says
The bipartisan support for international HIV/AIDS funding to supplement the Bush administration's budget proposal is "a welcome change in congressional attitude," a Seattle Post-Intelligencer editorial says, adding that the "pity is that so many people had to die before Congress woke up to the importance of taking measures to reduce the death toll." Although lawmakers have differing views on the AIDS pandemic -- some see it as a children's issue, some as a national security issue and others as a humanitarian issue -- "they are all right on all counts," the editorial says. "It took 20 years, but Congress finally has awakened to the existence of the worldwide AIDS pandemic," the editorial concludes (Seattle Post-Intelligencer, 5/29).
